On the ancient Isle of Skye rises one of Scotland's most dramatic mountain ranges, the Black Cuillin. Carved by volcanoes millions of years ago, these dark jagged peaks dominate the island's skyline and have watched over centuries of Highland history. In 1601 the final clan battle fought on Skye took place on these slopes between Clan MacDonald and Clan MacLeod, adding another layer to this extraordinary landscape.
I photographed this scene from the rocky shoreline as winter weather swept across the Minch. Low cloud wrapped itself around the mountains while the sea churned beneath a dark northern sky. A long exposure transformed the restless water into a veil of soft blue mist, contrasting with the rugged volcanic rocks in the foreground and the powerful silhouette of the Cuillin beyond.
Created on the Isle of Skye near my studio, this fine art photograph captures the wild beauty of the Scottish Highlands & Islands. Rich navy blues, charcoal greys and luminous whites create a calm yet dramatic statement piece, perfect for contemporary interiors. Available in bespoke oversized sizes, gallery canvas, fine art paper and metal, it brings the timeless atmosphere of Scotland's west coast into the home.
