A Journey into Oversized Landscapes

When I walk into a room and see one of my huge atmospheric seascapes breathing on the wall, I feel the space begin to whisper. In my experience as a photographer and painter, a single sweeping horizon doesn’t merely decorate a room – it becomes the story and soul of it. It doesn’t need companions to command attention. Large canvases naturally draw the eye and set the tone. To me, they feel like windows to distant places and moments I have lived.

The Gift - Isle of Rona with the Scottish Highlands in the distance. Standing on Skye’s clifftops one warm morning, I felt as though nature handed me a gift. Soft blues blend with lilac and teal, reflecting gratitude and quiet joy. The print is available in a range of generous sizes with bespoke options, making it ideal for meditation rooms or bedrooms.

A Silent Drama

A vast white snowcloud rolls slowly across a deep teal sea, its drifting snowfall softening the boundary between water and sky. In the distance, the hills of the Scottish Highlands dissolve into mist, blurring land and ocean into a single, hushed moment of quiet power and stillness.

Evoking feeling and atmosphere

I am drawn to scenes that evoke emotion, and enlarging an image amplifies its power. A tranquil shore rendered at scale can calm and soothe; a stormy cloudscape can stir drama. Design writers point out that the emotional resonance of art intensifies when it is big; it immediately becomes the anchor around which the rest of the room orbits. In my own work, I blend sky, water and light until they blur, allowing the viewer to breathe in the same hush I felt on the beach.

Playing with space and scale

In rooms with soaring ceilings or wide walls, oversized prints prevent the emptiness from swallowing the architecture. Horizontal panoramas stretch the eye along a wall; vertical pieces invite you to look up and take in the height. Even in smaller rooms, one big artwork can create the illusion of depth and make the space feel more expansive. Choosing a monumental artwork is, in many ways, choosing to show a piece of yourself. When a client hangs one of my large prints, they’re making a statement about who they are and what landscapes speak to them. For me, each piece is a personal narrative, and seeing it inhabit another’s home is like sharing a secret.

Fabric of the Landscape II

Standing near the Standing Stones of Stenness, surrounded by ancient history and a deep mauve September sky, this scene calmed and entranced me. The Orcadians weave beautiful fabrics using ancient dyes from the plants in their landscape, in this image texture and landscape combine. I was particularly in love with the moody purples of the sky harmonising perfectly with the ochre and browns in the reeds. I combined images of the textures with those of the landscape to create a feeling of fabric in the final piece.

Minimalism with impact

I believe in the quiet power of one thoughtfully chosen piece. You don’t need a gallery wall to make an impact; a single oversized artwork can define a room and let everything else breathe. The simplicity of one large image allows the colours and textures of the room to echo subtly, rather than compete.

Ostel Bay I

This piece grew from a dawn walk on a secret beach. A soft pink light curled around the Arran coastline and a mist hovered just above the water. The result is a neutral, ethereal landscape offered in sizes up to 90 × 60 inches with bespoke options.

Bespoke sizes and commissions

Much of my work is available in custom dimensions because I understand that every space has its own rhythm. Whether you need a square piece for a cosy reading corner or a long panorama for a dining room, I’m happy to create bespoke sizes. By tailoring the dimensions, we ensure the art aligns with your architecture and vision.

Side by Side - a minimalist impactful piece for quiet spaces

The Singing Hills

The Singing Hills is a panoramic, atmospheric abstract seascape shaped by the quiet hours before dawn at Luskentyre Beach. In this blue period of early morning, the landscape softens and the boundaries between land, sea, and sky begin to dissolve. Misty hills emerge gently from the distance, their forms blurred and dreamlike, while the sky carries waves of mauve and lilac that drift and blend into the land below.

The turquoise blues of the water move quietly across the foreground, reflecting the subtle colours of the sky and hills as if echoing their rhythm. The effect is both calm and immersive — a landscape felt as much as seen. There is a sense of music here, a slow harmony between colour and light, as the hills seem to hum softly beneath the rising day.

Measuring your space for large statement art

Over years of installing my work, I’ve learned a few things:

  1. Measure lovingly: Measure your walls and furniture before choosing a piece; an artwork should span about two‑thirds of the furniture width to feel balanced.

  2. Think orientation: Panoramas suit long walls; square or vertical pieces centre smaller spaces. Vertical artworks draw the eye upward, while horizontal ones add breadth.

  3. Echo colours: Pull accents from the artwork into pillows, rugs or wall paint. Harmonious palettes make the art sing with the room.

  4. Let it breathe: Give your art space around it. Avoid cluttering the same wall with multiple pieces so the large work can breathe.

  5. Light it gently: Use natural light or picture lights to bring out the colours. A glossy print reflects light and enlivens the room.

  6. Embrace simplicity: Don’t feel obligated to fill every wall. One dramatic piece can say everything you need.

  7. Customise boldly: If standard sizes don’t fit your vision, request a bespoke size. Tailored art ensures it harmonises with architectural details.

For me, oversized landscapes are more than images – they are windows into places where time slows and the world feels both vast and intimate. When you invite one of these pieces into your home or project, you’re inviting a story. I hope my work offers you a moment of calm, wonder and connection.
