9 Inspirational Ways to Use Large Wall Art

How Large wall Art Can Transform Your space

Extra Large Abstracts

You have bought the gorgeous sofa and spent a fortune on the flooring but what about that large space on the wall? Most living rooms have at least one wall where you can really make a statement, so use it to bring your space to life.

If your room has a beautiful fireplace then you may already have the perfect spot above it for a beautiful piece of art, but what if you don’t?

These days many homes have central or underfloor heating and without a focal point on one wall to narrow down the choices, the furniture arrangement becomes more more flexible. You may also find you have a lot more blank wall space to fill and while a minimalist white wall can be attractive, adding art will complement your furniture and create a sense of cohesion and completion.

To help demystify how to decorate a Living Room with large wall art, we've compiled 9 of our best ideas and examples. Choose from our suggestions, or browse the Skye Blue Portfolios and find your favourite or just get in touch for help and a free room mock up!

Go Gallery Wall…

Gallery walls are making a big splash these days, and you may feel they are over done, but think again. You don’t need to have a clutter of mismatched mementos filling the whole wall. Try instead choosing a few, slightly larger prints that create a beautiful harmonised look. In a Japandi style room for example, minimal colours and soft tones are important to creating the balance this look requires. Select prints that echo the soft minimalist feel of the furniture and/or the colour palette of the room. Neutral and pastel combinations work well.

Play with shapes… circular wall art

Maybe you need smoother lines in your décor, echo the curves from other parts of your decor or your furniture. Perhaps you simply find rectangles overdone. You'll be happy to hear that not all artwork has to be rectangular: take, for example, this extra-large circular wall art, ideal for those moments when you dream of serene tides.

Lift Neutral Palettes with a single blast of colour

A good rule of thumb when you don't know what to do is, follow your instinct. For example, if your room décor is otherwise colour-coordinated, consider complementing it with an colourful abstract. Blue looks against a neutral grey and white colour palette.

Go for high colour contrasts!

The bolder types might have already colour-blocked their decorative environment using their sofa, in which case, using a similar shade might make the room seem too uniform. So, how does one solve this issue? Go for high colour contrasts! Feel free to draw some inspiration from something in the room, the sofa, a lamp or a rug, and bring this tone into your space with a large, exquisite landscape.

Brighten dark walls with Natural colour….

Dark concrete walls are on trend but with no colour contrast they can feel heavy, dark and lifeless. Black wall decor is however not difficult as the monochromatic backdrop offers endless opportunities to create and recreate as many different looks as you can imagine. Whether you stick with the black and white minimalist look or use jewel toned splashes of colours from Nature in your artwork and soft furnishings to bring it to life, there is no doubt a black background can have a lot of impact.

Add a window to a small room …..

An extra-large seascape depicting nature extends the interiors, giving the illusion of spaciousness to what might be an otherwise tiny room. Creating quiet spaces in the home is important for our mental health. A calm space for reflection and remembering the peace of the landscape can be made with very little space required. Our selection of Scottish wall art is particularly suited for those who love the sea.

Double the charm

When one artwork won't do it, try two! Diptychs work exceptionally well with walls that are particularly high and wide. Whether this is an end wall where a splash of colour is needed to lift it from a bland forgettable corner or on a grand scale where the wall needs more colour than can be achieved with a single panel.

Create flow in open spaces….

In open plan room designs, the art on the wall plays an important role in creating the flow between each section. Each space must flow from one to the other and yet retain their individuality and mood. Panoramic wall art in particular creates a focal point that is otherwise missing in a large space.

Before and after…

Pre-visualise your room with beautiful art on the wall. Ask for a room mock up and let the colour flow in!
